Monitoring dashboard for oil drilling operations.

I enhanced the design of a customizable dashboard to inform better oil drilling decisions. As a design associate, I conducted the stakeholder interview, enhanced the information architecture, designed the interactions, and also helped with project planning.

There are two types of users using the dashboard, and both needs should be taken into account.

A driller's cabin crowded with screens, gauges and controls above the rig floor

User problem — unable to make well-informed decisions with overwhelming drilling data, hurting the drilling performance.

A field worker pointing at real-time tank data on a rig-side monitor

Field users — track real-time tank data to make decisions on current well construction operations.

Office users — gather drilling insights to create plans for future well construction operations.

The final design showcases how the key scenarios can be achieved with the enhanced dashboard.

Provide customization — monitoring tank data in groups, organizing data the way users want.

Provide flexibility — edit groups via add, reorder, and remove for better control.

Provide data insights — view data changes over time with trend lines, knowing how drilling progresses.

At-glance information — use visual differentiation to indicate tank volume level.

Make the data contextual — surface important information at the front with easy access to details.
