The first handshake with security data

Integrate with the first security data source.

I led the design of the onboarding experience to support the first security data source integration, creating a streamlined and scalable design that can be generalized to all other data sources.

From preview to public release, I supported the product team for successful rollouts and also mentored a junior designer to level up skills on user research and design collaborations.

Business initiative: expand to security data sources

But the problem is prominent: the existing onboarding flow is fragmented and takes a long time to complete, remaining the biggest friction to user adoption.

Fragmented onboarding flow analysis

Users need an efficient workflow with instructive information and confirmation.

Wizard design for streamlined onboarding

Streamlined experience — a wizard design to reduce cognitive load.

Built-in automation — to automate the index setup process.

Guided experience — a hand-holding experience with multi-level instructions design.

However, data integration is more than just onboarding. A truly streamlined experience should account for the end-to-end user journey.

End-to-end user journey map

The final design showcases the end-to-end data integration experience from first-time onboarding to later modification.

Kick off onboarding — a combined workflow with single entry point + learning page.

Connect to data source — a wizard design with guided flow to connect to the data step-by-step.

Configure data access — set up search and analytics with visual aids and built-in automation.

Complete onboarding — a review page before completion.

Validate — a consolidated page to quickly modify the configuration based on the validation.

Monitor — check the data usage via the connected dashboard for each connected data source.
